Item Description
Capturing skateboarding legends Mike Vallely and Mark Gonzales at the iconic Brooklyn Banks in 2017 was an unforgettable experience. This legendary session brought together two of the most influential skateboarders at one of New York City’s most famed skate spots, creating a moment that felt both nostalgic and groundbreaking. This was the first time in decades that Mike and Gonz skated together, and having it happen at the Brooklyn Banks made it a monumental event. These two pioneers of street skating, both known for their innovation and raw creativity, represent everything that makes skateboarding a culture, not just a sport.
The Brooklyn Banks, designed by M. Paul Friedberg and constructed in 1972, has been a skateboarding mecca since the mid-1980s. Located in Manhattan—not Brooklyn as the name suggests—the Banks became the epicenter of NYC skateboarding culture. Featuring granite ledges, various wallrides, a nine-stair rail, and the infamous big 13-stair rails, the area has hosted countless tricks and sessions that defined skateboarding’s identity. In 2017, Mike Vallely and Mark Gonzales reunited to skate the Brooklyn Banks in a session that was both nostalgic and exhilarating. Their styles, tricks, and fearless approaches to skateboarding have inspired generations. This session was notably featured in a Thrasher Magazine retrospective of the Brooklyn Banks, highlighting its historic significance. You can read more about it here: Brooklyn Banks: A Retrospective. Their styles couldn’t be more different, yet they shared the same passion that has defined their decades-long careers.
This shot captures not just a moment in time, but the essence of skateboarding’s rebellious spirit and the connection between two icons who helped shape it. This is the first time this image has been available in color, differing from the collaborative black-and-white version I previously released with Mike while working at Street Plant.
“In 2017 I skated there with Mark Gonzales for some double actions in the rain. It may be my favorite moment ever skating there, or in skating period.” —Mike Vallely
