Item Description
There’s something about Mike Ness under festival lights that just feels iconic. This shot was taken during Social Distortion’s set at Surf City Blitz on October 28, 2018, right on the sands of Huntington State Beach. It was one of those perfect Southern California nights—loud guitars, the ocean breeze, and a crowd of 40,000 punk rock fans who showed up to celebrate a stacked lineup of legendary bands.
For me, this festival was special in more ways than one. Alongside shooting the performances, I was honored to have 30 of my photos on display as part of an art gallery at the event. Being a longtime Social Distortion fan, capturing this moment of Mike, mid-song, guitar covered in stickers, with a single rose tucked into the headstock, was one of my favorite shots of the weekend. The band tore through a setlist packed with classics, and the crowd was right there with them, screaming every word to “Story of My Life” and “Ball and Chain.”
Setlist from Surf City Blitz 2018:
Road Zombie, So Far Away, Story of My Life, Bad Luck, Mommy’s Little Monster, California (Hustle and Flow), Gimme the Sweet and Lowdown, Another State of Mind, 1945, Machine Gun Blues, Ball and Chain, Ring of Fire.
Other Bands at Surf City Blitz 2018:
The Offspring, Rancid, Pennywise, Bad Religion, Suicidal Tendencies, Fear, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Interrupters, TSOL, Mad Caddies, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Wrecks, Sharp Shock, Lost in Atlantis, Aaron Lee Tasjan, 2nd Rate Kings.
Looking back, this was more than just a show—it was a celebration of the music that shaped so many of us. Social Distortion, Rancid, Bad Religion—these bands weren’t just playing songs, they were reminding us why we all fell in love with this music in the first place.
