Meeting Ian MacKaye and capturing this photo at the Dischord House was a surreal experience for me as a lifelong punk fan. Ian greeted us warmly, and as we toured the house, it felt like stepping into a time capsule. Upstairs, Ian showed us his childhood bedroom, where we listened to early Bad Brains demos—a moment that made the history of this house feel even more alive.
The Dischord House was more than just a home; it was a headquarters, a practice space, and a hub for creativity. Its basement, cramped and filled with instruments and amps, was where bands like Minor Threat, State of Alert, and Fugazi rehearsed. The upstairs rooms were filled with meticulously organized records, fan letters, and original master copies of Dischord’s releases.
What struck me most during my visit was how the house seemed to embody the DIY ethos that defined the hardcore scene. From hand-drawn album covers to records assembled at kitchen tables, everything about Dischord was about community, creativity, and resistance to commercialization.
The house itself holds iconic status in punk history. Its porch, famously featured on the cover of Minor Threat’s Salad Days, has become a pilgrimage site for fans around the world. Even now, punk enthusiasts visit the house to snap photos at the gate or to pay homage to the movement it represents.
This image, taken on that memorable day, is more than just a photo to me—it’s a piece of punk rock history. It’s also proudly displayed in the Washington, D.C. section of the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas, NV, as a tribute to the house that shaped so much of what I love about music.
